No sooner did Volkswagen roll out a redesigned Golf at the 2006 Chicago Auto Show than it decided to rename the car before it arrives in showrooms this summer. Instead of getting a new Golf, Americans will find that a Rabbit has bounded into the U.S., complete with significant powertrain and interior improvements. The 2006 Rabbit is a new car to us, but has been on sale in Europe for several years, where consumer interest has begun to sway toward newer competitors. That’s why VW chief Wolfgang Bernhard is fast-tracking a major update for the Golf/Rabbit to arrive for the 2009 model year. (more…)

FRESH from launching its all-new 159 sedan last week, Alfa Romeo has revealed full details of its second new-generation model, the Brera coupe, ahead of its official Australian release on June 16.
Two versions of the lithe Italian two-door will be available, with the front-drive 136kW 2.2-litre four-cylinder JTS variant opening the batting for Brera at $69,950 and the all-wheel drive 191kW 3.2-litre V6 JTS to be priced at $94,950 when it arrives here in late July. (more…)

HYUNDAI says that the time has finally come for it to venture back into luxury land with an all-new Grandeur.
The nameplate returns to Australia this week, after the previous XG model was discontinued two and a half years ago following slow sales and negative press surrounding inadequate suspension tuning. (more…)

WHAT is new about the Mini? Virtually everything bar the front suspension, claims the BMW-owned company, which unveiled the new Australian line-up in Tasmania this week.
