FRESH from launching its all-new 159 sedan last week, Alfa Romeo has revealed full details of its second new-generation model, the Brera coupe, ahead of its official Australian release on June 16.
Two versions of the lithe Italian two-door will be available, with the front-drive 136kW 2.2-litre four-cylinder JTS variant opening the batting for Brera at $69,950 and the all-wheel drive 191kW 3.2-litre V6 JTS to be priced at $94,950 when it arrives here in late July. Alfa Romeo has been turning out some impossibly beautiful cars. Unfortunately, most of the line-up is lacking the grunt to back up its killer looks, with the 8C Competizione floating beyond reproach atop the range and a huge gap down to the standard production models. I’m sitting in an Alfa 147, about to fire her up. I cast my mind back to the Alfasud: a beautiful, mellifluous, affordable vehicle that introduced a generation of drivers to the joys of performance motoring. I remember summer evenings in an open Spider, a peerless pre-Miata combination of boulevardier and Lotus-like lane pilot; a car whose zingy note merged happily with the sound of estival insects. I also conjure-up a trip to France in a sonorous, serious, quick-steering Giulia, where I felt like a character in a Truffaut movie. So, will the 147 be another driver’s Alfa that rasps, bites and feels alive?
