BMW X5 4.8i Review.

The vast majority of today’s SUVs and CUVs share the same modus operandi. They’re good for a bus, bad for a car. They’re thirsty, overpriced, overweight and over here. Most now come complete with a market-mandatory third row that’s as about useful as a werewolf at Trader Vic’s. So when I read BMW’s characteristically modest tagline for their new X5 SUV CUV SAV on their official website– “Room for everything except improvement”– I considered myself an honorary Missourian. Ultimate driving machine on stilts? Show me. Read the rest of this entry »

BMW Z4 review.

Consumers take advertising slogans with a grain of salt, and rightfully so. That’s what makes it so hard to believe BMW’s tagline, “The Ultimate Driving Machine.” But BMWs really are fantastic driving machines, and the Z4 is the ultimate expression of BMW’s ultimate goal.
BMW replaced the Z3 with the Z4 in 2003, initially offering only a two-seat roadster body style. The hard-edged styling was controversial at the time, but over the years consumers have come to accept it. The styling was mildly updated in 2006, when BMW introduced new engine choices, a sensuous hatchback coupe, and a high-performance M model. The Z4 carried over virtually unchanged for 2007. The most expensive is a two-owner silver car in New Hartford, Conn., with just 47,000 miles. It’s $28,950. Read the rest of this entry »

BMW M5 2008 review.

After a wait that must have been agonizing to lovers of the racy six-cylinder M3, BMW has finally engineered a high-performance V8 into the M5. And it has been racking up raves like no high-performance sedan in history. With a six-speed gearbox and 394 horsepower, the M5 on the 5 Series platform is a totally civilized sedan with racing car capabilities. Read the rest of this entry »

BMW X6 2008 review.

At the reveal of its X6 Concept, BMW gave the all-too-common explanation that while just a concept, the X6 could be produced. Swap “could be” with “will be” and you’ve got the truth of the matter. The X6 is on a fast track to production and the “concept” you see here is close to final form. Of course, the most talked about feature of the X6 is its raked roof that begins plunging after the B-pillar until it meets the rear deck lid. Compared to other CUVs, rear seat headroom and cargo space is obviously compromised, but BMW is betting that form will be more important than function to an X6 customer.

New BMW 650i Preview

BMW 650i previewThe 650i is considerably less aesthetically offensive than its predecessor; Bimmer’s booted bling for a more brand faithful return to understated elegance. They’ve enhanced the 6-Series’ strongest feature– its front end– by subtle tweaking the lower front bumper. The air intake is significantly wider than previous, and the borders at the bottom emphasize the car’s extra wide stance. Above, new LED lights form “eyebrows” over the headlamps, ditching Dame Edna’s glasses for a more austere look.
