Last year, as gas topped $3 a gallon and more people expressed more concern over global climate change, Chevy introduced a thoroughly redesigned but unrepentantly monster-sized 2007 Suburban. The Suburban was demonized by SUV haters. The result: In the first quarter of 2007, Suburban sales surged 10 percent over the same period in 2006. Suburban sales may decline as it becomes a costly alternative to a car, but what was once true, remains true: Read the rest of this entry »

The Chevy Avalanche successfully combines the hauling capacity of a long-bed pickup with the comfort of a five-passenger SUV. We found it an innovative, well-designed vehicle, impressively executed. Read the rest of this entry »

I greeted my temporary assignment to Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada with joyful anticipation. After numerous hours in an E-3 looking for simulated bogeys over the Mojave Desert, the proximity to Sin City was a welcome reprieve. Stepping down from my jet, Technical Sgt. Peters handed me a set of keys and pointed to the terminal’s parking lot. Examining the plate number on the tag, and seeing a Chevy emblem on the key, I expected a minivan. Instead, a ginormous Express 3500 15-Passenger van assaulted my vision. For this I defend my country? Read the rest of this entry »

The Chevrolet Matiz is not known for its speed nor is it known for its luxury. It could never be labelled a supercar but around town it is a super car and offers a few surprises in many areas.
The old Matiz was so popular that it made it to the top of the mini-car charts and the new one is set to follow, even though there are plenty of others in this segment. Read the rest of this entry »

Crossover vehicles, named for crossing over the line between car and sport utility vehicle, have been around for 10 years. Using the same type of unit-body construction as a car, crossover SUVs are generally lighter and more fuel efficient than traditional truck-based SUVs that use a heavier body-on-frame design. The Chevrolet Impala is a comfortable and convenient car, practical and enjoyable to drive. We find its neat, clean lines pleasing to the eye. Its styling looks fresh and it is. The Impala benefits from its recent redesign for 2006.
Several upgrades and refinements for 2007 make for a better car: The available 3.9-liter V6 gets GM’s Active Fuel Management system, which idles cylinders at certain times for improved fuel economy. A tire-pressure monitor comes standard. OnStar comes standard and has been upgraded for 2007, offering the new Turn-by-Turn navigation service. And OnStar will automatically communicate the nature and severity of a crash as well as its location to the 911 centers. Read the rest of this entry »

To evaluate the all-new 2008 Toyota Sequoia, I spent some quality time with comparable full-size SUVs from GM and FoMoCo. In back-to-back-to-back tests on the highways and byways of Denton County, Texas, I pitted the new Sequoia Platinum against the 2008 Ford Expedition King Ranch Edition and the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe LTZ “White Diamond” edition. Let’s not beat around the Texan brush: the Tahoe outshines its competitors as the best all-around full-sized SUV. Here’s why… Read the rest of this entry »

The project hasn’t exactly been a mystery. Chevrolet has been working on a high-end Corvette to slot above the Z06 as GM’s hottest sports car for some time. The car has been known as the Blue Devil and the Corvette SS, but when it arrives in dealers this summer it will be the next incarnation of the ZR1.
Power will be phenomenal. GM is targeting at least 620 horsepower and 595 pound-feet of torque. The ZR1 will be capable of reaching 200 mph and cornering at better than 1 g of lateral grip. Read the rest of this entry »
