Mercedes-Benz’s three-pointed star has long been synonymous with style and prestige, but it has historically taken a backseat to BMW’s blue and white propeller as a symbol of driving excitement. This was certainly true of the first-generation SLK roadster, which offered decent straight-line speed and a then-novel folding hardtop but lost points due to its archaic recirculating-ball steering design and generally less-than-sporting demeanor. As a staple, the E-Class will surely retain some fans based on its name alone, but reviewer Joe Wiesenfelder warns that the brand needs to innovate. While the E-Class coasts, competition in the midsize luxury sedan segment has grown fierce. Read the rest of this entry »

The launch of the next Mercedes-Benz E-class is right around the corner and Car’s spies were able to catch a mildly camo’d mule undergoing testing. The prototype is unmistakably M-B, with a new front fascia that appears to split the difference between the swoop CLS’s headlamps and the more conservative eyes of the C- and S-class. Underneath the cloaked sheet metal is Read the rest of this entry »

The Mercedes SL debuted in 1957 and has been an object of lust ever since. A two-seat, rear-wheel-drive roadster, the SL is the classic sporting Mercedes. Like the original, today’s SL boasts outstanding performance. The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class has matured in every way over its six generations, quicker and faster on the one hand, more beautiful and more luxurious on the other, to the point where it lacks absolutely nothing, from its array of powerful V8 and V12 engines to its powerful stereo to its active suspension system to those all-day bucket seats. It is a marvel of automotive technology, featuring a folding steel convertible top. Read the rest of this entry »

Mercedes-Benz released its redesigned C-Class compact sedan in the fall of 2007 as a 2008 model and is adding a high-performance C63 AMG model in April. The C63 AMG will also debut as a 2008 model.
The 2008 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG features a 6.3-liter V8 that makes 451 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. The all-aluminum 32-valve V8 has variable valve timing and a variable intake manifold. Mercedes says it can rev freely over 7000 rpm. Read the rest of this entry »

Mercedes-AMG, stashed away in tiny Affalterbach, Germany, not far from Stuttgart, has been building fast street cars and winning racecars for more than 35 years, first as an independent tuner of Mercedes-Benz cars, then as a partner company and now as a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. AMG predates BMW’s M, Audi’s S, Jaguar’s R, Toyota’s TRD and Nissan’s Nismo, all of the in-house tuners, by decades, and sells in higher volumes than any other tuner arm, to the tune of 20,000 cars and trucks last year alone. It’s the cheapest coupé in Mercedes’ model range. But the new CLC is by no means a budget option – and it has the price tag to prove it!
The diesel-powered 2.2-litre CDI version driven here will set you back just short of £22,300. On the face of it, that’s a large amount to pay for a car which originally went on sale back in 2001 – although buyers still get a lot of Mercedes for their money. Read the rest of this entry »

I flew into Los Angeles with aspirations of driving something powerful; I had visions of some mighty motor displacing six liters or more. Anything with the letters AMG on the back would have suited me just fine. Instead I was staring at a gigantic Mercedes GL 320 CDI. That’s CDI as in “diesel.” I reckoned it was going to be a long drive to San Diego. I reckoned wrong. Read the rest of this entry »
