The Mercury Mountaineer was created at a time when the Ford Explorer was the hottest thing since the planet Mercury. The Mountaineer provided a different styling take and a slightly more upscale interior than the Explorer, and its available all-wheel-drive system helped make it more appealing to people who just wanted all-weather traction rather than the pretentious off-roading ability of true four-wheel drive. Year after year, the Mercury Grand Marquis is a sales leader among full-size sedans, and it’s easy to see why. It has the most horsepower and torque, the roomiest interior and the biggest trunk of any vehicle in its class.
The Mercury Grand Marquis is the only vehicle in its class with a standard V-8 engine — the 4.6-liter, single-overhead-cam V-8, which produces 224 horsepower at 4,800 rpm and 275 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. At the Washington DC Auto Show, Ford announced that the Mariner will become “more fuel efficient, more powerful, and more connected in the 2009 model year.” The 2009 Mercury Mariner, along with the 2009 Ford Escape, are part of a strategy toward sustainability and fuel efficicency Ford’s been expanding upon since the Los Angeles and Detroit Auto Shows.
