When you’re growing up, everyone asks you what you want to be when you’re older – and I never had any desire to be a fireman or train driver. My ambition was to become an animator.I loved ‘anime’ (the popular Japanese art form), and quickly found myself taking an interest in Eastern imagery and culture. This dream came to an end at the age of about 15, when I discovered skateboards, football and all the other things that occupy a teenage boy’s time. Read the rest of this entry »

TriBeCa is a trendy, upscale neighborhood between New York’s Soho and Lower Manhattan districts. It isn’t cheap real estate. Nor is the Subaru Tribeca cheap transportation. Tribeca is a midsize crossover SUV with available seating for seven. Its overall dimensions put it in the same class as the Toyota Highlander and Nissan Murano; it’s nearly as big as a Ford Explorer. Properly equipped, the Tribeca can tow up to 3500 pounds. Tribeca is fully competitive in this class, especially given its lengthy list of standard features. Read the rest of this entry »

Two years ago, Subaru moved upscale with the Legacy sedans and wagons. For 2007, the carmaker hits its stride with premium technology, including and upgraded engine and a sporty new Legacy GT spec.B.
The 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer engine has been upgraded to an impressive degree, with the introduction of a technology that’s currently only available on some BMWs and Ferraris. Called Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive), it allows a driver to twist a knob to select one of three engine performance levels: Intelligent (economy), Sport (sport) and Sport Sharp (high performance). The Subaru Forester works superbly well on gravel, dirt and other types of unpaved roads, and performs swimmingly in rain, snow and icy conditions. The Forester is the perfect transport on logging trails in the Pacific Northwest, for example or for getting to a Michigan trout stream on a sandy two-track. Moreover, the Forester is excellent for inclement weather in just about any locale. Its variable all-wheel drive systems work better in driving snow on the Interstate than the typical dual-range four-wheel drive system in truck-based SUVs. Read the rest of this entry »

Station wagons with manual transmissions are quickly going the way of the fedora. In fact, there are more gas-electric hybrids for sale stateside than row-your-boat wagons. If you want an all-wheel-drive model, the number plummets. Which makes me wonder: what’s the point of the Subaru Outback five-speed? Read the rest of this entry »

It’s rare when two classically opposed models debut at the same time. The Subaru WRX STI hits the show floor at the same time as its archrival, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. That’s like debuting the new Camaro alongside the new Mustang. The differences between the two, however, have never been more clear: The Subaru is a hatchback, while the Mitsubishi is a sedan.
